Create a Popup That Converts + Skyrockets Your Email List

I absolutely love talking about list building strategies. Growing your email list should be one of your top priories with an ecommerce and subscription business.

Email popups are an incredibly useful asset for building your email list. If you’re not using them, or you aren’t leveraging email popup best practices, you’re missing out on an easy and effective way to generate email leads.

A big part of what makes popups such an effective tool is their versatility. You can use them for any call to action, such as generating email leads, getting more newsletter subscribers, or conducting a visitor poll.

In this article, we’re going to cover email popup best practices that will help you build your email list. You’ll also get some design inspiration along the way.

Know Your Audience

One of the first things you need to do is drill down into who your audience is and what would get them super excited to give you their email address.

Different Types of Popups

There are a few different types of popups, so depending on your business and the personality you have a few options!

  1. Exit intent: this popup is designed to show up when a user scrolls up towards the X out button, so essentially it tries to grab someones attention with a discount or message before they exit your website.
  2. Standard popup: This is the type of popup that you see most often on website. After a specific amount of seconds or minutes on a website, a pop up block appears with an offer. You can choose when the popup appears ad what pages it should and shouldn't appear on. If you aren't sure which popup is best for you, go with this option. It's simple and easy to set up.
  3. Wheel of Fortune Style: These are very hot right now. Essentially the popup is like a wheel of fortune game where you spin the wheel for a prize... and just a sidenote, there is always a prize. These have some of the highest conversion rates for popups. We will include an example below.

How To Boost Conversion and Opt in Rates

There are ways to make your popup convert better.

  1. Make sure your pop up is set to go off when your visitors have been on your website for at LEAST 20 seconds. One mistake I see all the time are popups that show up the second I land on a website. Big mistake. most people will X out of that because they haven't had 2 seconds to digest your website your offers and your products.
  2. Make your offer relevant to your audience. Make the offer something irresistible that they are dying to give you their email address for it. For e-commerce and subscription businesses, discounts are the way to go. Do what works for you in terms of margins, but generally 10% is golden. You can test dollar amounts to but it really depends on your product. Other offers could be Free Shipping, Free Item with purchase, etc.
  3. Keep your copy short and sweet. Make your call to action crystal clear.
  4. Make your buttons a bright color. Did you know that oranges, reds and pinks have the highest conversion rate on popups than other colors. Just something to think about when your crafting your popup.

Examples of Successful Popups

Pura Vida Bracelits

They use the wheel of fortune style popup. This is such a great example of how to make a popup irresistible for the user. They created prizes that are perfect for their ideal customers, like a free bracelet and 10% off, its a win win for anyone who spins. They use the shopify app Just Uno for this, but apps like Omnisend and Sumo also offer this.

This cleaning company uses a countdown popup by Groovejar. Groovejar is one of my personally favorite apps for list building. What they do is offer a popup but it has a countdown timer, which creates a huge sense of urgency and "fear of missing out" to users. I can personally attest to this as well, for one of my previous businesses we had an upwards of 10% conversion rate for this popup, where most popup conversion rates are between 2-3%. If you have a shopify store they connect, as well as Cratejoy. Do yourself a favor and SIGN UP WITH GROOVEJAR.

Skinny Me Tea

Below is a great example by skinny me tea. The branding aligns with their website and the text is bold and clear to action is extremely clear
